January 6 2005...a day i'll never forget...
12 noon: ms tan came up and asked me to help look out for pan fei's dad's car... (was a little irritated at her initially... )
we waited...
the wind was blowing in my face... and everything was quiet except the occasion vehicles passing by... the dried leaves were being blown off ground creating a little tornado... we waited quietly... this being the first time i waited with a child being obedient... afterall... kids this age tend to run about or talk... the trees continued to sway... and we were silent...
12.15: was beginning to wonder whether he'll be late for school considering his school's in sengkang... wanted to ask him what time does his school starts but i refrained myself from doing so... as i see the calmed face on him... i felt that i shouldn't make him panic... i mean... if it was me... i'd have panic by then and insisted i gave my dad a call... instead i was the one worrying of what's going to happen if he's late... will his teachers punished him? tried to strike a converstion... failed the first time... i asked... so your school wears black shoes... and he nodded... after a few moments... i tried again... 'where do you live?' his reply was 'there...' he pointed... '288...' and he continued... 'i want to come here during the holidays by myself...'
12.20: mr derrick and auntie lam came up...
auntie lam was like... your father's not here... mr derrick said... ' his father says 12.15... and its about 12.15 now...' then... they left to pick up students...
moments of silence again.... somehow... i felt at peace with myself... wondering when will i ever learn to be like this boy... he didn't even complain about his father being late... instead he waited patiently...
12.30: still no sign of his father...
i'm really beginning to worry... where's his father? should i lend pan fei my phone to give his dad a call? but... whenever i see his face... i see this sense of calmness that i don't get to see in most people... except maybe the other person is alan... but... still this 9 year old boy's the real winner...
12.36: his father was finally here...
i can see that his eyes did light up... the moment i asked if that's his car... and then... we waited for awhile for him to turn into the carpark... the excitement in him makes the day even more meaningful... somehow... maybe i'm being too emotional... but...somehow... i feel that it's rather a heart-warming sight... as he got into the car... he waved good-bye... and his dad... rolled down the passenger window... and gave a wave too...
[ i learnt some things from pan fei... that is never to panic and never to complain about the other party's lateness... a truly well-behaved and remarkable child... ]
